What You Need to Understand About Weed in the USVI

Is cannabis a legal product in the Virgin Islands, United States? Among the places where CBD is a legal product is in St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix. It is important to note that in the areas above the rules and regulations are yet to be approved for medical marijuana use. The territory of VI does not have any active medical cannabis dispensaries currently. Recreational marijuana is not available in the USVI, however, the process to legalize it is still in the works. However, possession of recreational marijuana under 10z was also decriminalized and the authorities typically confiscate it and fine you. An important fact you need to know is that medicinal marijuana was decriminalized in 2014 in the VI.

The USVI legalized medical marijuana in the January of 2019. However, medical marijuana is not yet available in the USVI. The Virgin Islands cannabis advisory board will achieve a quorum probably between June and July of 2022.

The medical cards for residents who wants to use medicinal marijuana will cost up to $50 every year. A temporary medical marijuana card will be issued to visitors to the Virgin Islands who want to use the product. These medical cards for tourists will cost as much as $50 for 5 days, $75 for 10 days, and $100 for 30 days. A Virginia Island residents with a medical cannabis card will be allowed to grow up to 12 cannabis plants. The US VI will not recognize medical marijuana cards that are issued by other jurisdictions.

It is not likely that recreational marijuana will become legal in their USVI anytime soon. Decriminalization does not necessarily mean that recreational marijuana can be used legally. It is advisable for you to know the penalties that apply for cannabis possession and distribution in USVI. If the authorities confiscate more than 10 oz of cannabis from you, the fine will be way higher and you could even end up serving time. Minors who are caught abusing marijuana will have the product confiscated from them and they’ll be forced to attend a drug awareness program. The penalties for smuggling or growing marijuana are still quite stiff compared to the others.

On the other hand, cannabidiol is legal in the USVI and can be bought in St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix.
